How To SEO a Website

How To SEO a Website

  • Carefully choose a title tag - Choose a title tag that fits your page, and also include the keywords in your title tag in the body of your page. Don't over stuff your title tag. And its optimal to use a short sentence or phrase, or 2 - 3 keywords or keyphrases separated by a pipe character, example Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Keyword 3 |Keyword 4.
  • Don't over stuff your meta tags - Your meta keywords should be longer than your title tag, but also contain the keywords that are in your title tag. Your meta description tag should contain a summary of what the page is about, like the meta keywords tag, it should also contain the keywords in your title tag.
  • Give useful information - Instead of just flaunting your product or service, give some kind of useful information, such as a guide, glossary, or reviews of products or services. Getting a well ranked site goes hand in hand with providing a good user experience. Rather than creating a sales pitch only page, have something valuable for you the user.
  • Create links to other sites - A site should not be designed using myopia, you should like out to other sites as well. Link to several external sites, whether they are related sites that you have a link exchange agreement with, or sites that your visitors might also find useful.
  • Ask for links from other sites - As part of your linking process you should request links from other, related sites. If your selling cars, don't ask for a link from a clothing site. Rather ask one of your part suppliers, or accessory suppliers to link to you from their site. Then you can give them a reciprical link, on an appropriate place in your site, in return.
  • Use appropriate alt tags - All your images should have appropriate alt tags. Make sure the tag matches what the image is about. Don't stuff your alt tags with keywords. One good tip you can use is to find images that are appropriate for keywords you want to target, and then alt tag them accordingly.
  • Don't try to "trick" the search engine - there are a lot of unethical techniques out there to trick the search engines. The best advise I can give you is don't use them. Most of the don't even work that well, and if they do work today, they're not going to work tomorrow. And in most cases they will get you banned, or at least penalized, therefore its best to avoid them all together.
  • Create a sitemap - Create a sitemap, call it sitemap.xml, place it in your web root directory, for example if you are on a server with cPanel, your web root directory is public_html. Use can then submit your site map in Google's Webmaster Tools (WMT), so the Google spider can easily find your pages. Be sure to update your sitemap regularly.
